Learn to slow down and observe Nature through keeping a mindful log

Writing, sketching and taking photographs can be relaxing, thought-provoking ways to reflect on the world around us. Why not cast that reflection on the Great Outdoors and allow it to strengthen our mindfulness and connection with Nature?

Geauga Park District’s monthly Nature Journaling series provides great inspiration to do just that. This spring’s remaining sessions are both scheduled for Sundays. They will draw their inspiration from the weather around us at Observatory Park on May 4 from 1 to 3:30 p.m., and from life around the pond at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve on June 8 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Registration is always required by phone, for the purpose of identifying first-timers, at 440-286-9516. First-time participants pay $20 if a resident of Geauga County or $24 if living out-of-county, which includes the purchase of a new journal, pen and other supplies. Those who’ve already registered within the calendar year attend for free. And those who’ve attended the series before, but not within the calendar year, pay $10 if a county resident or $12 if living out-of-county, which covers additional instruction and supplies.

Naturalist Renell Roebuck, who hosts the program, started Nature journaling about six years ago to combine art with her curiosity about the natural world.

“I choose topics that I’d like to broaden my knowledge in so that I can pass along my curiosity to my participants,” she said. “In return, they ask questions and share their own experiences with the class. You don’t need to be an artist to Nature journal, you just have to want to slow down and make your Nature observations intentional – literally take time to smell the roses or see what visits them.”

Wrote one participant, who attended a January introduction-to-journaling session: “Renell opened my eyes to a whole new way of experiencing and honoring Nature. Thank you for offering this wondrous program.”

Beginners are always welcome. Feel free to call or email Renell ahead of time with questions at 440-226-2894 or rroebuck@geaugaparkdistrict.org.
