Jeanne Armitage of Garrettsville, OH

387

On February 12, 1927 Jeanne Armitage began what would be the wonderful and fulfilling journey of her life. Jeanne was born in Rootstown, Ohio. She is predeceased by her parents Elsie (Bissell) and Roy Armitage and two brothers Willard and Russell.

Jeanne graduated from Kent State University in 1949 with a degree in Physical Education. This was the perfect field because she disliked wearing dresses and after several years was able to wear pants to work. After spending several summers at the University of Colorado in Boulder, she received her Master’s degree. On these trips her father would tag along for the chance to do a lot of sightseeing on the trip out and back.

Jeanne’s teaching career spanned 38 years and included teaching positions at Jefferson High School in Ashtabula County, Massillon Perry and finally Shaker Heights, Ohio. Jeanne retired from teaching in 1983 and shortly after moved to Garrettsville, Ohio.

Jeanne enjoyed traveling and she did a lot with Carolyn Bruce and her bus tours. She went to Europe and Australia commenting she did not like being in the air over the ocean that long.

Most notably Jeanne was an avid golfer and played the Sugar Bush course frequently. One day playing her usual round of golf, it turned out to be anything but usual as she had a hole in one. She was even more surprised when she ended up in the local paper for that hole in one.

After the passing of her good friend Carolyn Bruce and after several winters as a snow bird in Arizona, Jeanne decided to make a permanent move to Arizona to play golf. She belonged to several golf groups and when the weather was good she would golf 3 or 4 times per week. This was where her heart was.
Jeanne’s journey ended as she passed away peacefully on December 26, 2022 with her good friends Mark and Julie Lord at her side. Jeanne was born the same year as Queen Elizabeth and they passed in the same year. Being a devoted anglophile, we only hope she and the Queen will be sharing a spot of tea.
For a life well lived Jeanne will be remembered by her friends far and wide. She is survived by her niece Lisa Armitage.

There will be no visitation or public service.
