Garrettsville – The JAGHS met on April 19, 2021 for its first in-person meeting since May 18, 2020—HUZZAH! The group welcomed two new members, Tim Smith (hardly new to the area) and Linda Harring (in from Chagrin Falls). The treasury was reported to be healthy and the CD’s remain in their cozy financial institution.

The meeting then opened up to discussion of the proposed Garrettsville History Walk, to be presented in conjunction with the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club, with focus locations scattered around the village, from the Baptist Cemetery to the park on Park Avenue to St. Ambrose Church on Freedom St., across from The Mill and MB Realty on Main St. This will involve period costumes and lots of research, with the proceeds directed, at least in part, toward the restoration of the Dunn Mausoleum and other features of the Baptist Cemetery which is the final resting place of quite a number of area pioneers and is so recognized by the Ohio Historical Society, which placed a bronze marker there.

Under new business, it is hoped that there will be a new intern from Hiram College helping to organize and catalog, since the previous one (Ms Chinn)did such a good job. InterAct members looking for community service hours may get a chance to participate as well. Entries for the Charles E. Porter Memorial Scholarship have been received and will be judged in time for the presentation on May 18. Plans for participation in SummerFest–August 6, 7, 8– will be discussed soon. JAGHS will remain part of the Past Perfect program cataloging and indexing the accumulated items in the group’s collection by computer; the previous intern made a great start.

There will be a board meeting on 4/27/21. Dues are due. Kudos went to the individuals–Barb Hardest & Patty Singlyn–who have been designing and maintaining the displays in the window of the historic Mott Building; long may they wave! There was conversation and introductions all ‘round. The next regular meeting will be on the third Monday in May–May 17.
