Garrettsville – The James A. Garfield High School Quiz Masters Quiz Bowl team recently got their first ever league title. The Academic team capped off an impressive 14-0 season in the Portage League by being crowned champions in January.
The Quiz Masters, coached by Iva Walker, maneuvered their way through a difficult schedule, including perennial powers Western Reserve Academy and Cloverleaf. Some of the matches were played online and others in person, so adjustments had to be made every single week.
The league finale was hosted by Rootstown, where the Quiz Masters faced Brunswick in a battle of unbeatens. Both matches went down to the wire, but the Quiz Masters prevailed. Junior Jack Rado received League Player-of-the-Year honors for the third year in a row.
The Quiz Masters will continue their season at Upper Sandusky High School in March for Small School States, which could get them a bid at Small School Nationals in April. Congrats to the Quiz Masters, who can be found on Twitter @jagquizbowl.
