Garrettsville – On Friday, March 4th, the James A. Garfield High School Quiz Masters hosted the Portage Quiz Bowl League Tournament at the Garrettsville Family YMCA on Park Avenue. A 16-team Varsity field and 8-team JV field encompassed the tournament. Despite being called the Portage League, teams from Summit, Geauga, Medina, and Stark counties were in attendance.
The Quiz Masters were granted the number-one seed due to their regular season title, so their path to the final was smooth. Two huge victories over Kent Roosevelt and Bio-Med before the lunch break propelled the Quiz Masters to the semi-finals against Cloverleaf. The Quiz Masters bounced back from a rocky start to win big once again.
Junior Cameron Edwards scored a Varsity career high in the win, which set up a final match against 3rd-seeded Aurora. Adversity was once again overcome in the final match, as the Quiz Masters were only up by 5 at the half. A big run in the second half led the team to victory and a tournament championship.
Team and league MVP Jack Rado teams up with Edwards, senior Cass Swenson, and 8th grader Lillian Kercher to round out the varsity squad. The much improved JV team played their best Quiz Bowl of the season on their way to a 4th-place finish.
The Quiz Masters, coached by Iva Walker, look to continue their success on Saturday, March 12, at the Small School State championships at Upper Sandusky High School, and the Small School National Championships in April in Rosemont, Illinois.
