James A. Garfield Local Schools is putting the community in the driver’s seat — literally. On Saturday, June 21, from 9–11 a.m., the district will host The Big Yellow Tryout, a one-of-a-kind event inviting the public to test drive a real school bus around the JAG campus in Garrettsville.
Held at 10235 State Route 88, this open house gives participants the chance to hop behind the wheel alongside a trained JAG instructor and get a firsthand feel for what it’s like to drive a school bus. No pressure, no commitment — just a fun and informative way to explore whether this meaningful part-time job is the right fit.
“Being a bus driver is a great job for parents, retirees, college students, or anyone looking for rewarding work with great benefits,” said Roger Fisher, JAG’s Transportation Director. “Most people are surprised at how manageable it is once they try it!”
Participants must be 21 and have a valid driver’s license. While a CDL would be required to drive full-time, participating in The Big Yellow Tryout requires no CDL or formal training. They’ll get to explore the driver’s view, test the mirrors, and drive a guided route around campus. Driving slots can be reserved in advance or claimed onsite as available.
JAG offers paid training, full-time benefits, and hourly pay ranging from $20.11–$25.23 based on experience. Applications are open now at jagschools.org, and walk-in interviews will also be available at the event.
For those curious about a flexible, impactful career — The Big Yellow Tryout might just be your first step on the road to something great.
