The James A. Garfield Historical Society met on April 16, 2018 to cover the following items of business:
Treasurer Connie Knop stated that some funds had been moved into CD’s to garner better savings interest, bills had been paid, support monies had gone out to Christmas Walk participants and the group is solvent.
The fourth home for the Christmas Walk has been determined. Residences of the Romecki (State St.), Kearney (Mumford Rd.), Lane (Shawnee Trail) and Kissell (North St.) families will be on the tour, as will St. Ambrose Church–for luncheon and refreshments.
Preparations will be and have been under way for the big event. Themes and committee are under discussion and forming. Systems are heading for “GO”.
SummerFest is coming and the small garden next to the Mott Building will need to be updated and decorated. Hours for having the building open and volunteers to staff the facility have yet to be determined, probably afternoons on Saturday and Sunday. Schedules are open for volunteers. There is some interest in having a float in the Grand Parade, possibly in co-operation with another group.
The JAGHS is mentioned twice in the new Discover Garrettsville publication. The recent Chamber meeting was an “apptegy” demonstration on how to use the new Discover Garrettsville online app. The JAGHS will abe able to publicize programs, projects and information through this format.
Scott Lawless’ upcoming book, Where’s the Milkman? is in process and the JAGHS may or may not be part of the distribution process. He may also be presenting a program here in the future.
A communication from the Trumbull County Historical Society listed a selection of programs and attractions available to local (NEOhio) historical society groups.
President Debbie Smith attended a textile conservation workshop at the Kent State University fashion museum and found it to have been worthwhile, informative and amazing. She discovered that the museum had a cadre of dedicated stitchers/sewers to maintain their collection. Could such a group be recruited here? Other suggestion for implementation included rotation of displays, downsizing the amount of “stuff” to better present outstanding examples, the acquisition of a specialized, dedicated vacuum to care for delicate items. A demonstration of techniques may be in the offing.
The list of paid-up members revealed that many had missed their sign-up/paid-up date in January and a policy of notification about the necessity of being up-to-date in dues in order to be on the mailing list, to hold office, to be considered a member in good standing and to participate in the organization’s activities will be discussed and implemented.
The JAGHS meets on the third Monday of the month in the historic Mott Building on Main St., Garrettsville, at 7:30 p.m. Interested members of the public are always welcome. New members and willing workers are always in demand.
