The February 19, 2018 meeting of the James A. Garfield Historical Society was chock full o’ business, since the January meeting was cancelled on account of weather. The treasurer’s report was wide-ranging and positive, including some gifts received in remembrance of the passing of founding member Delma Mishler. Taxes, income, savings, the bill for furnace repairs all were included. Dues are due.

Gene Semplak was delegated to contact Silver Creek Plumbing to check a backflow valve, whatever that is.

New members of the board of trustees are Sarah Jane Carley, Barb Hardesty, Gene Semplak, and Bonnie Oliver; renewed members are John Zizka and Lynn Fry.

The topic of Christmas Walk reared its festive head. Maureen See will be overseeing the craft show once again; she needs some information and an assistant, if possible. She already has experience. A check with the Village Hall is needed for scheduling as well as early notification of vendors. The subject of obtaining equipment to process electronic payments by customers was discussed. St. Ambrose Church will be the location for lunches and other refreshment this year. The four houses to be on the tour are all but set, some final arrangements are being discussed and made. Stay tuned. The topic of compensation to homeowners and churches on the Christmas Walk came up and will remain the sameas the last time–$600 per house and $450 to the church, to contribute to general and decorating expenses. The idea of enlisting downtown merchants in a window decorating competition was floated and will be presented to the Chamber of Commerce. Patty Singlyn will be doing the front window of the Mott Building for the historical society.

The Mott Building will be open for visitors on St. Patrick’s Day, with light refreshments available from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The JAGHS Scholarship application submissions will be done online this year. The wordiness of the theme to be addressed was reduced and the requirements will be sent to the high school by February 27. A committee will decide the winners.

There will be a new display case display coming soon, when Scott Lawless will bring his local dairy milk bottle collection to be enjoyed. Perhaps pictures of past Christmas Walk homes will be in the case leading up to the big event.

The Nelson Literary Music Club and the local Senior Citizens group will be coming to tour the Mott Building soon.

Only how many days until Christmas?
