Hiram – In an effort to protect citizens and prevent the spread of Covid-19, the April 14th meeting of the Village of Hiram Council was conducted as a remote meeting. While designated Department heads were permitted in Council’s Chambers, Council members and citizens were invited to access the meeting online via Zoom. As of the time of this article, the May 12th meeting will be held in the same manner. In legislation, Council approved Resolution 202-06, authorizing a transfer of $26,000 to the Capital Improvement Fund, to comply with an agreement with Hiram Township over funding the jointly supported Fire Department.  Later, Councilman Paul Spencer made a motion, “to suspend rent to the Hiram House Salon during this period from the point of closure due to the State order”. Council approved the motion to provide relief to the salon, which is operated on Village-owned property.

Later, Council went into executive session for the purpose of “negotiating a real estate contract on the Garfield Road property owned by Hiram Farm”.  Council reconvened shortly thereafter with a motion to authorize the Village Solicitor to draft a letter to Hiram Farm to postpone the Village’s offer on the Garfield Road property until after the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In other news, the Village, together with Hiram Township, advertised for residential solid waste collection service. Bids will be accepted until 1 pm on May 19, 2020, Bids are for residential solid waste collection service for the Village of Hiram and Hiram Township. The proposed contract length is for a three years beginning on September 1st, with an option of a two-year extension. 

In a public notice by order of Mayor Lou Bertrand (effective March 17th) “In the interest of the health and welfare of our residents and Village employees, the Hiram Village Financial Office will be closed to the public until further notice.” Please note that all Village offices will be operational during normal business hours:  Monday through Friday from 8am until 4 pm, but will not be open to the public. To make payments, residents are asked to use the drop box located inside the Rosser Municipal Building lobby or mail payments to:

HIRAM VILLAGE, P.O. BOX 65, HIRAM, OH 44234. In a statement online, it was noted that timely payment of the water/sewer utility bills is appreciated. While past due notices will still be mailed, in light of the current public health emergency, there will be no water/sewer utility shut-offs during March, April or May 2020.  

Lastly, curbside brush pick up is still scheduled to take place on the last Friday of May, June, July, August, and September. The next scheduled brush pick up will be on May 29th. Please note that the amount left at the curb should be no more than two men can load in 15 minutes.  Leaves and small twigs must be bagged in biodegradable bags and sealed with a biodegradable tape or twine.
