Hiram Township to Participate in Scrap Tire Program

2290

Hiram Twp. – Christine Craycroft, Director of the Portage County Parks District attended a recent meeting to discuss the Cuyahoga River Water Trail program. Craycroft requested the trustees consider issuing a letter of support for the Water Trails group, which has a mission to improve and promote public access to and use of this shared resource. The group is seeking support from municipalities adjacent to the waterway, and consists of several cities and villages as well as county and national parks. The collective entities aim to collaborate and organize educational programs, with the goal to improve access, safety, and health of the river. The trustees agreed to issue a letter of support on behalf of the township.

In Old Business, Trustee Jack Groselle mentioned a recommendation from Hal Stamm who suggested that the township start taking electrical and mechanical bids for the new building. Stamm cautioned that the drawings must be reviewed and stamped by an engineer prior to applying for a permit. Groselle will seek out more guidance on getting the drawings completed before the township advertises for bids. In other news, trustees agreed to apportion one-tenth of an acre of land situated near the village’s water tower to the village at no cost to the village.

Moving forward, the trustees approved the appointments of Roger Monroe to the Zoning Board and Judy Zidonis to the Board of Zoning Appeals, each for five-year terms. They also approved Don Prall and Jason Groselle as alternates to the Zoning Board and John Groselle as an alternate to the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Lastly, trustees noted that Hiram Township and Village will once again participate in a scrap tire collection program on Saturday, May 18th, from 8 am until noon. The collection will take place at the village’s Rosser Municipal Building parking lot (11617 Garfield Road in Hiram). This year the program will include several changes. It was noted that passenger tires and tractor tires with rims will still be accepted. However, a strict limit of 10 tires per vehicle will be accepted. (The Ohio EPA requires a “Tire Manifest” document for anyone hauling more that that amount.) Tires that are muddy or filled with dirt won’t be accepted. Tires from heavy equipment, semi tires, treads from mini excavators, or chunks of metal will not be accepted, nor will cut tires or tires from commercial businesses. Portage County Solid Waste Management District funds the scrap tire collection program at no cost to the community.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Hiram Township Trustees will be held on Tuesday, April 23rd at 7 pm; residents are encouraged to attend.
