Hiram Twp. – Since the July meeting, Trustees were informed that Portage County Solid Waste would be reducing recycling collection in both Hiram Village and Township to biweekly, as of August 2nd. According to Bill Steiner, Director of the Portage County Solid Waste Management District, the change is due to the organization’s inability to find drivers.
Hiram Township Trustee Chairman Jack Groselle remarked on seeing other communities in the County moving to bi-weekly service, but “didn’t think it would happen to us.” He noted the Trustees opposition to this move, but noted that the County Commissioners allowed the change. He directed residents to direct their questions and comments to the Commissioners.
Steiner attended the Hiram Village Council meeting last Tuesday to discuss the change in recycling service to the Village and Township, and residents were encouraged to attend.
For the time being, County residents can continue to drop off materials at the Portage County Recycling Center in Mogodore, should they choose to do so. Steiner has requested that County Commissioners close the Drop Off Center when recycling service has returned to normal levels. He noted the added burden to staff, since residents as well as those from outside the County use the Drop Off to dump non-recyclable items, which employees must sort and dispose of.
In other news, Hiram Trustees shared that the NOPEC application for the 2021 Community Event Sponsorship of $1,000 has been completed, and will be provided to the Hiram Fire Department for community education. In other news, Fire Chief Bill Byers discussed the upcoming purchase of a replacement squad. He noted that the cost would be roughly $240,000 prior to a trade in valued between $20,000 – $30,000.
The next regular meeting of the Hiram Township Trustees will take place on Tuesday, August 17th at 7 pm in the Township Hall.
