Hiram Farm Hosts Holiday Sale

800

The Hiram Farm’s annual Holiday Sale takes place Thursday, December 5th through Saturday, December 7th from 10 am until 3 pm. That’s when you’ll have the opportunity not only to shop locally, but to support the organizations mission and participants by buying their handmade crafts, bath and body products, and ceramics. In addition, don’t miss out on the farm-raised beef and pork for holiday celebrations.

The Hiram Farm opened 15 years ago on a 120-acre farm with a mission to create meaningful work for adults on the Autism Spectrum. That initial year, six adults with autism joined the program, learning to establish and cultivate gardens in ground in in small greenhouses and to tend sheep and goats. They also made garden plots available to the public, building community with local neighbors.

In 2010 the Hiram Farm more than doubled, serving 16 workers with disabilities. Another greenhouse was built, and construction began on their iconic barn. That year, the livestock program also expanded to include chickens and pigs. By the second year, the program expanded to include 22 farmers. The community garden project doubled in size and the Hiram Farm participants created craft items and grew seedlings. The products of their efforts, including meat and eggs, were offered for sale, providing the farmers with the ability to learn, earn and directly support their community.

In 2012, the farmhouse next door was purchased, providing art therapy, weaving and ceramics programs. In addition, the space included the administrative offices. A store was also created, enabling local shoppers to purchase crafts, household items, and foods produced on the farm. Over  time, the Hiram Farm expanded to serve individuals with developmental disabilities as well. In 2017, they welcomed their 31st special-needs farmer.

For 15 years, the Hiram Farm has continued to support local individuals with disabilities while simultaneously building lasting ties within the local community. This holiday season, in addition to supporting local businesses, use your dollars to support an organization that makes a huge impact on the lives of the families it serves.

The Hiram Farm Living & Learning Community is a nonprofit organization that provides services for adults with developmental disabilities, with an emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorder  (ASD). The Farm provides opportunities for these adults to grow, learn, work in a setting focused on respect and support for individuals and the environment.
