Hiram College Students Provide Free Tax Filing Assistance

2387

Hiram College Tax Volunteers are partnering with the Ohio Association of Foodbanks to offer free tax filing assistance through the Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB) to qualifying residents in Ohio.

Student counselors who serve as Hiram College Tax Volunteers are trained and exam certified in income tax preparation by the OBB. They work under the close supervision of a faculty member in the Accounting and Financial Management Department at the college.

“The service provides Hiram College students with practical experience in their given career field, while allowing them to use their talents to give back to the community,” said Romeva Prcela, director of the Scarborough School of Business and Communication.

This is the seventh year that the College has partnered with OBB, an innovative online service that connects Ohioans with more than 20 work support programs and tax credits, including the Earned Income Credit (EIC), the Child Tax Credit and various Education Tax Credits. It provides Ohioans the opportunity to file their federal and Ohio state taxes for free with a trained counselor through organizations like Hiram College Tax Volunteers.

The free service is available to married joint-filing taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $95,000 or less, and single and head of household taxpayers with an AGI of $65,000 or less. Additionally, the free service is only available to taxpayers who do not have any Schedule C, D, E, or F items. Clients may opt to receive a refund by direct deposit to a checking or savings account.

To schedule an appointment with Hiram College Tax Volunteers, please contact Romeva Prcela, at 330.569.5127 or prcelarb@hiram.edu. Appointments for tax filing are available on Saturdays, February 9 through April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Hiram College Kennedy Center basement.
