James A. Garfield High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society is actively pursuing its objectives this quarter. The student-led group initiated fundraising efforts in July with an all-donation car wash at the Sarchione Chevrolet parking lot, a recurring annual event for the society. Subsequently, the group organized a profitable school bake sale, yielding additional proceeds without incurring expenses. The National Honor Society emphasizes four fundamental pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Throughout the year, the organization strives to embody these principles within our community. Comprised of students in the 11th and 12th grades, the group annually inducts approximately 20 new members, thereby replenishing its ranks.

The most recent induction ceremony, held on November 14th, welcomed a cohort of well-rounded scholars who embraced the NHS pledge and received a white rose, the official flower of the NHS.

Recently, NHS members sought to express gratitude to the high school staff and organized a pre-Thanksgiving Break brunch, taking charge of preparing and serving food to all staff members in the building. Additionally, the NHS is preparing for its annual cleanup days this spring, dedicated to maintaining the appearance of the Garrettsville area.

While these endeavors effectively encompass the essence of NHS pillars, each project is overseen by a smaller team, typically consisting of 4-6 students. This structure allows senior members to assume leadership roles while imparting efficient task completion methods to younger members, preparing them for future responsibilities.

The National Honor Society stands as one of the largest student organizations nationwide, boasting over 1 million members. Celebrating its centennial in 2021, the NHS is widely recognized for its significant impact on students’ post-secondary prospects.

Under the guidance of Doug Engelhart, the club’s advisor since 2022, the group has continually elevated its level of impact within the community, striving for greater achievements.
