Geauga County Public Library to offer Deterra bags for safe, at-home drug disposal

2254

Geauga County – January 20, 2020 – In order to help manage the amount of excess medication and to help prevent prescription drug abuse, GCPL is collaborating with Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers to make Deterra bags available at all library Branches as a free resource to Geauga County residents.

Deterra is an independently tested, safe, and environmentally sound solution to permanently deactivate, destroy, and dispose of unneeded pills, patches, liquids, creams, and films right at home. Deterra offers community members a chance to safely dispose of leftover, unused, or expired drugs. In a simple 3-step process, a user can bring the Deterra bag home and deactivate drugs, thereby preventing drug misuse while protecting the environment.

Deterra is an independent, lab-tested, and scientifically proven system that permanently deactivates drugs, making them non-retrievable for all practical purposes. Other highlights include:

• Deterra can rid any home of dangerous, leftover drugs in minutes.

• The carbon used is organic, chemical-free and completely safe for at-home use and disposal in normal household trash.

• It’s convenient and easy to use: 95% of consumers report no difficulty with use and 96% report using Deterra within four weeks of receiving it, with nearly half reporting use within the first 24 hours.

• Deterra provides a convenient and immediate alternative to flushing or discarding medications and prevents still-potent drugs from contaminating our water supply and landfills.

• Deterra compliments national and local drug take-back programs and collection kiosks by providing an affordable, at-home option for those with limited access to safe disposal.

GCPL and Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers want Geauga County residents to be safe about prescription drug use and to be safe disposing of drugs. Geauga County residents would be able to take home Deterra for at home use by following Deterra’s simple 3-step process: you simply open the bag and add your medicine to it, then add warm water, let it set a minute, seal it and throw it in the trash. Deterra will be available at all of our branches.

Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers, Inc., is a private non-profit agency, providing continuous service to the community since 1971. The Center provides a wide range of services for adults whose lives have been affected by their own or another’s use of alcohol or other drugs, problem gambling or by mental illness.
