Garrettsville – Hiram Rotary Report

Garrettsville – The September 10, 2018 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club, in Cal’s II, Sky Plaza, Garrettsville, served as the monthly business meeting and covered the following topics:

The Reverse Raffle is coming in November; a planning meeting is scheduled for Wednesday morning. Sponsors and donations are being sought. Items may be brought to the Garrettsville office of Middlefield Bank. The caterer is confirmed; supplies are being rounded up. The ticket printing proofs are set and available for perusal. Systems are GO.

A comprehensive treasurer’s report covered a multitude of operations. There was a catching up on the status of various grants and projects, funds transfers, outstanding checks, documentation for bank information and a positive available balance. Good job.
Natalie, the current exchange student in James A. Garfield High School, is settling in nicely, participating in cross country, finding her way around new experiences and needing additional paperwork for her home school. She’ll be scheduled for an appearance at a G-H Rotary meeting soon.

The Lighting of the Falls Project and the Boardwalk Update project are going well, with many volunteers—beyond the participation of the GHS InterAct Club—pitching in on the staining of the wood guardrails and prep work for the lighting project. “Friends of Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary” shirts may be their reward. Speaking of which, there were thoughts about coming up with new signage to let everyone know about the Boardwalk, its location and views. With another major rain and the proposed lighting, it could be quite the showplace. Everybody come see.

The Dictionary Project is on. Third graders at the James A. Garfield Elementary School will be receiving their very own dictionaries by November. This has been supported by a grant from McDonald’s; the same financing is being sought.

Upcoming program assignments for the months were divvied up and will include the exchange student and RYLA participants, possibly the district governor, possibly someone to speak on the operation of a short-term student exchange program available in summer, other subjects too numerous to mention. Come to see the activities of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary, Mondays at noon, Cal’s II, Sky Plaza, Garrettsville. “Service Above Self” isn’t just a slogan here; it’s the way things are.
