Garrettsville – Hiram Rotary Report

899

The June 4, 2018 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club, at Cal’s II, Sky Plaza, Garrettsville was a regular business meeting and covered the following topics :

Programs for June are still being sought. President Amy Crawford presented the Rotary Scholarship on May 30 to Carissa White and Simon Varner. There was discussion of recent topics—weather, restaurant reviews, graduation, Memorial Day—for example. It was proposed and approved to donate $1000 to the Rotary International Foundation. Budget restrictions and commitment came under scrutiny. The report on John Wolfe was that he is at home and improving.

SummerFest is fast approaching; plans for the Rotary float in the Grand Parade will likely include Santa’s sleigh—per the annual Rotary Christmas present delivery project—and a tie-in with the James A. Garfield Historical Society’s biennial Christmas Walk coming up this year is being considered.

The Lighting of the Falls project is starting to groove and sponsors from the community will be welcomed. There is some thought of having a celebratory event, possibly in October, to inaugurate the lighting. Could there be an art exhibition? Where might this take place? What about the Boardwalk? Watch for more thoughts on this!

Also coming up sooner than we think, is the annual Reverse Raffle on the first Wednesday in November (11/7/18 this year), so plans for that will be firming up. The fountain by the Boardwalk is undergoing repair and renovation; the steps near there may be ready for a similar action. Information has been received about the prospective new exchange student for next year, a girl from the Czech Republic. Host families are still being recruited; it’s an excellent experience and anyone interested should contact a Rotarian for more information. Dues are due.

Plans are being made to update a listing of Rotary projects and information, local and international to let the public know more about how Rotary lives up to its motto—“Service Above Self”. Should be a long list.
