Garrettsville – Hiram Rotary Report

706

The Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club met for their last meeting of the month and dealt with a number of topics.

A check for the registration of RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) students will be going out to cover participation fees for the event. Rotary Scholarships will be presented on May 30 at the James A. Garfield Senior Awards night; these are each for $500.

There was discussion of the success of this year’s Rotary Student Exchange participant, known by local friends and teammates as “Chovie”, and his coming departure for home. Local Rotarians are investigating possibilities for having new exchange students next year, emphasizing the view that students who participate in fall sports often have the best experience fitting in to a new ambience/community. Also, the local Rotary club is seeking families who would like to host students from a foreign country for a limited time (3 months); it’s an adventure and a learning experience. Students from Garfield could also choose to attend school in a new learning venue. Interested families and students should contact a Rotary member.

InterAct students will be helping on Wednesday with the planting and mulching project near the bike station at the end of the Headwaters Trail.

Thoughts circulated about the flower baskets in downtown Garrettsville designed by the Silver Creek Garden Club; they’ve been much-admired. The Chamber of Commerce-supported electronic sign to be located by the light is approaching placement, after design review, cost estimates, etc. Chamber scholarships for Garfield students will be presented at a Scholarship Luncheon. These will be both college and technical education oriented.

A Garfield levy committee survey will be going out to random voters in the district to seek opinions on the options for a November ballot. The two choices are : the usual property tax or tax on earned (not retirement or SS) income. There will be a levy request in support of the James A. Garfield Local School District on the ballot in November, the question is : What kind?

And then there were a few wildlife tails…er…tales.
