Garrettsville – Hiram Rotary Report

749

Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary met on Monday, April 16, 2018 at noon in Cal’s II, Sky Plaza, Garrettsville for their regular appreciation of the work at hand. This included a get-well card and an update on John Wolfe, a thank you to a much-missed Mike Keas, who is now in Akron/Kenmore, information on the continuing Shoebox Project, a welcome donation of $509 resulting from the 50/50 drawing associated with the April 15 Queen of Hearts event, a report on the successful roadside clean-up on April 14, wherein some thirty bags of refuse were collected, including a 1940 Ohio license plate and a quarter; a good time was had.

Then discussion turned to finishing off the disposition of grant monies for signs, benches and landscaping on the Headwaters Trail–deadlines exist. The possibility of a “pollination station” as part of this planning came up, as did the name of Hiram’s Ohio Prairie Nursery to assist in making this conform to the desire to focus on indigenous plantings. More information will be sought. In that same vein, was the discussion of the possibility of lighting the falls beneath the Boardwalk. President-elect John Crawford has been pursuing the idea with people associated with Cleveland’s Nela Park. Delores McCumbers has made contact with Edison Landscaping and Lighting Design from the Youngstown area. Technical issues, engineering elements, cost, visual appeal, community involvement all will be part of the consideration n. This could be a genuine Garrettsville attraction, benefiting the community. Meetings and inquiries are being scheduled. How about a Lighting Festival? Stay tuned.

The club also considered and approved a donation to the Garrettsville Dog Park, per a request from Owen Bass, who originated the park and is seeking to add benches and a pavilion. Treasurer Lisa Muldowney gave her report for the year’s first quarter. Jeff Sheehan of the Garrettsville Village Water and Waste Water Department is on tap for a coming program as speaker.

Service Above Self is happening in Garrettsville-Hiram.
