Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Report

639

The February 24, 2026 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary was the occasion of a most interesting and informative program presented by Olivia Pilon , Executive Director of the Portage County Land Bank. The purpose of the land bank is to facilitate the return of properties to productive use through conversion of vacant, blighted, abandoned, and tax-delinquent properties for community benefit. The process may involve renovation or rehabilitation or sale, or even, demolition. Clearing titles as well as the grounds themselves, supporting new construction, partnering with local governments are all part of the mix in the effort to grow the tax base, encourage investment, stabilize property values, lower crime potential and build residents’ pride when blight is removed. There are varied approaches…and results, for this proactive approach to housing and economic development, financed largely by grants. It is a way forward focussing on solutions to community difficulties. Most informative.

And on the local level: the District Conference approaches on April 24-25; all members are invited for a great learning experience. The Storybook Trail demo posts will be ordered soon so that possible sponsors can get a look at their contributions.

It’s all good.
