Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Report

399

Speaker Pam Montgomery of the James A. Garfield Historical Society regaled the members of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club with fascinating facts about the area–Garrettsville, Hiram, Freedom, Nelson–and its people. This included Garrettsville bands ( Young Garland Randall used to ride his bike in from Nelson so he could play his clarinet), the Ohio Rose developed by a local horticulturist, the whistles which sounded off to notify people about the weather (Pity they weren’t here last Saturday), secret societies in Garrettsville. Roger Cram chimed in with a tale about James A. Garfield and some faux slave-catchers. Most enjoyable.

There were updates on the upcoming Golf Outing–flyers out, donors and sponsorships still being sought; June 2 approaches, posthaste. More info on possible incoming exchange students may be coming. G-H Rotary will be, once again, contributing to the signs for seniors, which should be coming out soon. Rotary Scholarship entries are in and will be read soon. The District 6630 conference at the Cleveland Marriott will be an event of April 28 & 29. The semi-annual roadside clean-up with the InterAct kids will be on Sunday afternoon, April 16. D. McCumbers gave a brief look at the operations of the district grants committee operation–in color. Signage around town was discussed.

Happy Bucks were offered for the return of electric power (but not for everyone) and a trip to West Virginia.

It’s all good.
