Garrettsville Farmers’ Market Launches Produce Perks Nutrition Incentive Program

4772

Fresh, healthy produce is now more affordable in Garrettsville for people shopping with SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps). Garrettsville Farmers’ Market is excited to announce the launch of the Produce Perks program, which provides a dollar-for-dollar match to SNAP customers to spend on fruits and vegetables. The program helps our community members using federal benefits stretch their grocery dollars to purchase more healthy foods.

In Ohio, 1.4 million people rely on federal benefits to purchase food each month. When customers spend their SNAP/EBT dollars at participating locations, Produce Perks DOUBLES their purchasing power. The Produce Perks program provides an unlimited $1-for-$1 match for SNAP customers (until June 30) for fruits, vegetables, herbs, seeds, and seedlings. In 2018, Produce Perks sites across Ohio made over $800,000 in healthy food sales.

Produce Perks is Ohio’s statewide nutrition incentive program, overseen by the Ohio Nutrition Incentive Network. Convened in early 2016, the Ohio Nutrition Incentive Network (OHNIN) is a multi-sector coalition working to increase affordable access to healthy food for Ohio’s underserved communities, while strengthening local farms and economies.

This year, SNAP shoppers can find Produce Perks at 100+ farmers markets, farm stands, mobile markets, and community supported agriculture (CSA) programs, and select grocery retail stores throughout the state of Ohio.

Garrettsville Farmers’ Market operates 4:00pm- 7:00pm every Thursday, June 4 through August 27 on Main Street in the heart of downtown Garrettsville. Shoppers can find a wide variety of products including fresh produce, eggs, cheese, locally raised and processed meat, fresh baked bread and pastries along with small batch artisan foods such as jams, honey, maple syrup, spice mixes and more.  In addition to Produce Perks the market currently accepts SNAP benefits and Senior Nutrition Vouchers and is in the process of becoming a WIC voucher location.
