Garrettsville – JAG Schools held its annual “State of the Schools” event on April 24th, Superintendent Ted Lysiak provided updates on the district’s recent construction and renovations, as well as highlighted scholastic and extracurricular achievements. The event took place at Iva Walker Auditorium and was attended by members of the school district’s administration, staff, and residents.
One of the key updates shared by Lysiak was the completion and dedication of the new Booster Concession Stand at JAG Stadium, which will serve both the band and athletic programs. Additionally, energy-efficient windows and doors were installed at the elementary and high school buildings, HVAC improvements were made in all buildings, and AV technology in Iva Walker Auditorium was upgraded. Moreover, roof replacements are nearly completed on all three school buildings, and a new all-weather track and throwing area is slated to open mid-June, allowing the school’s track and field program to host meets for the first time in over 20 years, beginning with the 2024 season.
Scholastic and extracurricular accomplishments were also celebrated at the event, including the JAG Quiz Masters’ back-to-back wins at the state Academic Challenge meet, the success of the spring musical and two plays, as well as the historic achievement of Hunter Abdel and Keegan Sell, who both won state wrestling titles.
The event also focused on the 2023 “Moonshot” project, a collaborative effort between the school district and the community to set the direction for the years ahead. This initiative follows similar efforts in 2013 and 2016, which resulted in the establishment of the JAG Core Values and the Graduate Success Goal, respectively. The new vision for the JAG Schools, as unveiled during the event, aims to shape well-rounded scholars for the future.
The JAG Vision, presented by Lysiak, sets a goal for 95% of JAG students to participate in co-curricular, extra-curricular, or mentorship opportunities that increase self-awareness, academic achievement, and contribute to post-graduate success by 2028.
Furthermore, the event also introduced four pillars of success that expand upon the original Core Values of the district. These pillars are Supported, Prepared, Involved, and Driven. Under the pillar of Supported, JAG Schools aims to provide a safe environment that supports the learning, physical, and emotional needs of students, staff, and the community. The Prepared pillar focuses on preparing the JAG community for success in a changing world through innovative experiences that develop critical thinking and resourcefulness. The Involved pillar emphasizes offering opportunities for everyone to discover their interests and involving the entire JAG community in creating experiences that develop well-rounded individuals. Lastly, the Driven pillar aims to inspire actions that align with passions, enhance self-discipline, and work ethic within the JAG community.
