The Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard, a 501(c)(3) organization serving residents within the James A. Garfield Local School District, provided critical food assistance to hundreds of families in 2024. Covering Garrettsville, Nelson Township, Freedom Township, and parts of Hiram Township, the program served as a vital lifeline for those in need.

Over the course of the year, the organization assisted 136 households, comprising 364 individuals. Families with children accounted for 77% of those served, while adults between the ages of 18 and 59 represented 21%. Seniors comprised 2%, highlighting the diverse needs of the community. Most families served were small, with 80% containing one to three members, while 17% were families of four to six.

The pantry also welcomed 49 new families in 2024, supporting 115 individuals who turned to the organization for the first time. On average, households utilized the service 6 months throughout the year, reflecting an ongoing need for the NGCC as its client base grows.

In total, the Cupboard distributed 32,385 meals, averaging 15 meals per person. This effort ensured nutritional security for residents across the service area.

One aspect of NGCC that has grown significantly has been its delivery service.  We started delivering three years ago with one delivery each month.  We are now delivering four times per month.  In 2024 NGCC made 436 deliveries to homes.  This was an increase of 62 deliveries over 2023.

“We are incredibly proud to serve as a vital resource for our neighbors in need,” said NGCC President, Ted Lysiak. “The continued dedication of our volunteers and the unwavering support from our community make it possible for us to provide this essential service. Together, we are not only addressing food insecurity but also fostering a stronger, more compassionate community for everyone.”

The NGCC also strives to reduce the stigma often associated with seeking help. Food insecurity is a challenge no one should face alone, and there is absolutely no shame in turning to the NGCC for assistance. Beyond the minimal information needed to comply with its partnership agreement, your privacy is our top priority, and your decision to seek support remains entirely private. The NGCC is here to provide a judgment-free, supportive environment for anyone in need. Your name and address are used solely to confirm residency within our service area and for anonymized reporting required by our partner, the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. No personal data or information about your client status is ever shared beyond this purpose.

Clients visiting the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard (NGCC) are encouraged to come prepared with a few key items to ensure a smooth and efficient experience.

New clients should bring a state-issued driver’s license or photo ID to their first visit, along with a piece of mail showing their name and residential address. This helps confirm residency within the Cupboard’s service area. Additionally, clients should provide a list of all household members, including names and birthdates, to help volunteers accurately assess their needs.

Returning clients are also asked to bring a state-issued driver’s license or photo ID to each visit. If there have been any changes to their household size since their last visit, they should inform the volunteers so their records can be updated accordingly.

In-person service hours, at the Garrettsville YMCA, are the first Monday of every month from 3:00-5:00pm; and the second Wednesday of the month from 9:00-11:30am. Home delivery is available for registered clients, with delivery occurring one Wednesday per month after 3:00pm.
