The Hiram College James H. Barrow Biological Field Statixqon is pleased to announce its schedule of programming and educational outreach events for October through December. These events are meant to engage the public in an understanding of the outdoors and environmental practices while actively engaging with nature and exploring the outdoors. All events are free and open to the public. Below is a listing of the Field Station’s upcoming programming.
Research Feature: Oak Wilt

Lynn Vogel, from the Portage County Soil and Water Conservation District, will be discussing the identification, management, and resources available to help us fight against the fatal oak disease, oak wilt.
Fungus at the Field Station

Join mushroom researcher Sarah Culliton ‘25 to learn about common and unique fungus found in the Field Station’s forests. A walk in the woods could turn up some of the last great specimens of the season. This is an educational event only; foraging is not permitted on Field Station property.
Bio Buddies: Fall Frolic

You’re invited to come visit the Field Station’s old-growth forest as it changes from green to gold. This event is for pre-school children aged 2.5 to 5 years old. Students must be accompanied by an adult. A snack and a craft will be provided.
Wings on the Wind

Join a naturalist at the James H. Barrow Biologic Field Station for lively discussion about migrating waterfowl and feeding our winter backyard birds. We’ll also be discussing ways to participate in the 124th Audubon Christmas Bird Count this winter.

Hiram College Forest Ecology Professors Michael Cunningham-Minnick and Alexa Wagner will explore strategies for studying the forest ecology of the Field Station through a whole-system perspective, setting the stage for long-term research that will embrace the uncertainty of ecological outcomes. Bio Buddies – Forest Ramble

Beavers in B-Flat

Join Naturalists from Portage Parks and the Hiram Field Station to learn about our favorite eco-engineer, the beaver! Hiram College music students will provide some music in the key of B-flat in honor of the beaver’s tail. Public Event, including students and campus community. Ohio’s Lake Erie Birding Trail with Jamey Emmert

Learn about Ohio’s Lake Erie Birding Trail program. Project manager and Avian Education Coordinator, Jamey Emmert of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, will discuss the 2025 reboot of the popular guidebook featuring updates to the existing 88 locations, as well as new hot spots.

The James H. Barrow Biological Field Station is a 500-plus-acre active research and educational facility located three miles from Hiram College. The Field Station not only enhances the biology and environmental studies programs but delivers enrichment and inspiration for students in all majors. It is also equipped to provide more than 50 different science enrichment programs for public, private, or homeschool groups in grades K-12. These education and outreach programs are correlated with the Ohio Learning Standards and Model Curriculum for Science for each grade level.
