Mantua – Since 2007, the Downtown Mantua Revitalization Corporation (DMRC) has been helping fund projects in Mantua in an effort to breath new life into the historic village. From smaller scale projects like the addition of planter boxes, park benches and bike racks throughout the village to providing matching funds in support of larger projects; the DMRC is committed to investing in Mantua.
But due to Covid-19, the DMRC has had to forgo this year’s key fundraising events. Due to concern for public safety, the group has had to cancel this summer’s ‘Art on the Hill’ festival as well as the ‘Night at the Races’ fundraiser this fall. Without these key events, the DMRC can’t raise the estimated $30,000 in matching funds it raises annually — funds used in the village’s efforts in obtaining grants. For example, due in part to matching funds provided by the DMRC, the village has been awarded grants for projects including the addition of sidewalks at the south side of Mantua and the match for an Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant to connect the Headwaters Trail in the village.
As with many schools, businesses, and organizations changing how the operate in the midst of a pandemic, the DMRC is also changing how they operate in order to continue helping make Mantua a place where businesses, residents, and visitors thrive. To that end, the DMRC will host an online auction event in early November, giving supporters near and far the opportunity to ‘Experience Mantua’ virtually through the purchase of art, products, and services from local artisans and businesses.
According to DMRC President Edie Benner, items including paintings, woodcarvings, quilts, and jewelry have already been donated. Unique experiences including a photo shoot, coffee tasting, a ‘paint and sip’ party, and a monthly pie subscription will also be on the auction block. Benner noted that all the artists who participate in Art on the Hill have been contacted, with many already providing their support for this worthy cause.
In addition to supporting the village, each donation provides the giver with a two-minute video and/or Facebook Live video, enabling them to describe their product or service or show their studio or business. In addition, links and contact information will also be provided. And for those not as tech-savvy, Benner noted that the DMRC will provide assistance, if needed.
