Whoa !!!
The Olympics certainly have some MAJOR MOMENTS ! Lindsey Vonn and her ill-fated return to the Women’s Downhill, for instance. What a thing ! She wipes out her knee, her Achilles tendon anyway; she vows to go back at it; and she does, then lucks into a fracture and gets helicoptered away. We’re talking drama here, friends. Also pain and plain ol’ bullheadedness. Good Grief! Later, of course, the U.S. takes a first in that same event. Hope Lindsey got to see that in the hospital.
The “Quad God”–a young fellow on the rise– (referring to some sort of majorly difficult spin which he mostly nails) got snookered a bit in his first event but he’ll be back, no doubt. Also back will be the Ice Dancing(pairs) event which is an absolutely amazing display of musicality, grace, fluidity and strength all combined to wow an audience…and, hopefully the judges. I’m always leery of events which involve judges–and broadcasters’ commentary/explanations. But the crowd sounds usually let one know what has most impressed the spectators. I, of course, am viewing all of this as one who does not always trust my ankles going up and down steps, let alone glide across a frozen expanse in a spangled tutu (Tutus are out now-a-days; lots more plunging necklines and flirty fannies–still spangled though). My tutus are all in storage now–probably covered in ice chips.
And the sheer power! I know that those women are impossibly slender, but those guys are picking them up over their heads, wrapping them about their bodies, whirling them around and reeling them back in, only to be lifted again…what showmanship… what muscle.
I do wonder who some of the participating countries got to design their national uniforms…well, actually, all of them. They mostly leaned toward the colors of their national flag; hence, red, white, blue , yellow, green predominated across the board. The combinations were the thing though–stripes, splashes, stars, swoops–you name it somebody had that combo. Luckily, the hats were mostly what made any given team identifiable, though a few were in languages with which not that many of us were familiar :”Polska” was not that tough to figure out but who knew “PRC” (People’s Republic of China)?
Stay tuned. Another week to go. Be prepared to be amazed.
