Hiram – The Hiram College Board of Trustees has appointed David P. Haney, Ph.D., as the 23rd president of Hiram College, effectively immediately. Serving as the interim president since fall 2020, Dr. Haney is an accomplished higher education leader with expertise in strategic planning.
Dean Scarborough, chair of the Hiram College Board of Trustees, said the decision was due in part to Dr. Haney’s success and leadership during his first year at the College.
“The 2020-21 academic year was strongly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Dr. Haney was able to guide the College through a challenging period in Hiram’s history while ensuring the overall health and safety of the campus community,” said Scarborough. “The Board has also been impressed with Dr. Haney’s design thinking approach to evaluate and address the College’s areas of opportunity, positioning Hiram to better meet the needs of its students today and tomorrow.”
During his interim presidency, Dr. Haney worked to identify options for the most sustainable path forward for the College. The transition to a longer-term presidency will give him the opportunity to help evolve current initiatives and develop long-term strategies for new academic offerings, enrollment marketing, transfer student articulation agreements, community engagement, diversity and inclusion, campus sustainability, and financial stability.
“I am honored to be given the opportunity to help build a strong and prosperous future for Hiram at such a pivotal time in higher education,” said Dr. Haney. “In my first year alone, I’ve been given the pleasure of working with such committed students on initiatives like diversity and campus sustainability; with our Development Office to get to know many of Hiram’s very generous donors; to develop relationships with other college presidents, K-12 leaders, state and federal legislators as well as our local government officials; and to engage in Northeast Ohio workforce initiatives. My wife, Lisa, and I look forward to experiencing Hiram in person this fall, with a return to live cultural and athletic events; meetings with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees; and all the informal interactions that make Hiram such a welcoming community.”
Dr. Haney came to Hiram College after serving two years as the president of Centenary University, a private liberal arts University in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Prior to his presidency at Centenary, Dr. Haney served four years as the vice president for academic affairs at Emory & Henry College, in Southwest Virginia. He also held administrative and faculty positions at Appalachian State University, Black Hills State University, Auburn University, and Swarthmore College. Dr. Haney began his administrative career as dean of students at the Cambridge School of Weston, a progressive secondary boarding and day school in Weston, Massachusetts.
