Mantua – At their last meeting, the school board recognized the 2021 retirees from the district. Among them, Sally Benner (28 years of service); Lorraine Calapa (21 years); – Cheryl Goggin (21 years); Carol Gries (31 years); Tommy Kessler (33 years); Laura Phelps (31 years); Mary Jo Stoneburg (28 years); and Celia Tench (20 years of service). In addition, Superintendent David Toth acknowledged students Kaityln Campbell and Jacob Carpenter, recipients of the R. A. Horn Outstanding Student Achievement Award and Monica Wolford, who was awarded the Franklin B. Walter Out Standing Educator Award.
In other news, according to Operations Manager, Jeff Woolard, since Federal ESSER grant funding can be used to improve air quality, the district inquired of MacMillian & Company to conduct a study to determine how improvements could be made to improve air quality and potentially air condition the High School building. Jim MacMillian of MacMillian & Company reviewed the study in order to share his findings with the Board.
MacMillian reviewed the existing building inefficiencies and offered options for consideration, including Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF), which uses ionization which removes airborne viruses or using an existing unit ventilator coupled with a new outdoor chiller. After some discussion among the Board, McMillian explained that the last scenario would require that outdated piping within the building to be updated. He noted that in the case of the new system, everything would need to be insulated, and the facility’s current boiler room does not allow for the required updates. In addition, electrical upgrades would be required in all scenarios as well. MacMillian noted that should the board decide to move forward, the district should select a bid in the New Year, for the project to commence in early summer 2022.
The next regularly scheduled school board meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 22nd at 7 pm at Crestwood Primary School.
