Mantua – At the last School Board meeting, which was held the evening after the first day of the new school year, Superintendent David Toth shared that nearly 1,300 District students had attended in-person class, while an additional 280 students attended school virtually. He thanked teachers and staff for their hard work in preparing the buildings and individual classrooms to be ready to begin the new school year. Toth noted that he had occasion to be in each of the District’s buildings several times throughout the first day, and was proud to see every kid masked up in hallways, classrooms, and on buses. He noted that adherence to the required precautions have enabled school to resume and sets a good foundation for whatever is to come during this new school year.

Next, the Board discussed how to proceed with notifying the community about the plans to cease collection of the existing $1.4 million levy, should the proposed earned income initiative be passed by voters on November 3rd. Board President Karen Shultz advised that she’d follow up with legal counsel to gather insight on whether the Board needs to pass a resolution stating their plan to cease collection of the old levy, should the new levy be passed; or whether a formally-worded public statement would serve the same purpose. More details will be forthcoming at future Board meetings. For more information on the District’s proposed earned income tax levy, visit crestwoodschools.org.

In a video message distributed to the community after the close of the first week of classes, Superintendent Toth shared that the District experienced a “tremendous opening of the school year” and thanked teachers, staff, students, and parents for the teamwork they exhibited that “made a stressful time smoother and easier”. He noted that while the District is still “working out the kinks” in in-school and online learning procedures, he was proud of how well teachers, staff, students, and families are adapting to the new normal. He noted that the ability to stay in school in person depends on cooperation in following the  mask up, social distancing, and hand washing protocols, and thanked everyone for their cooperation.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd at 7 pm. Please visit crestwoodschools.org to access a link to the meeting.
