The Garrettsville Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the recipients of its 2025 Community Scholarships: Ollie May and Makaylyn Spencer, both recognized for their exceptional commitment to kindness, service, and leadership.
Each student was awarded a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their academic accomplishments and unwavering dedication to bettering the lives of others.
Ollie May, a graduating senior with plans to study biomedical engineering and pre-med at Miami University, has spent his high school years volunteering in homeless shelters, supporting immigrant families, and providing humanitarian aid in Latin America. In his scholarship essay, Ollie wrote, “I try never to pass up an opportunity to assist someone in need. I am happy I did not turn these opportunities down.”
Ollie’s long-term goal is to work with global medical relief organizations like Doctors Without Borders. The Chamber recognizes him not only for his acts of kindness but for the integrity he has shown in pursuing a life of meaningful service.
Makaylyn Spencer has chosen a path in education and is passionate about shaping the future through teaching. Inspired by mentors in her own life, she has spent time assisting in Sunday school and early childhood classrooms. She shared in her essay, “Even though my responsibilities were small, I felt a sense of fulfillment in helping younger children learn and grow.”
Makaylyn hopes to create a classroom environment where students feel seen, valued, and supported. Her goal is not only to educate but to uplift, writing, “Kindness is not just about small gestures—it has the power to change lives.”
