Burton – On May 10, the Rotary Club of Burton-Middlefield (BMR) kicked off their new Endowed Scholarship for Nursing with Kent State University Geauga. The $25,000 Endowment generates funds for a student pursuing a career in the nursing field and is a collaboration between the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club and KSU Geauga to increase nursing careers for local students who choose to study and eventually work, without moving far from home. This scholarship will be available to any student who is a current resident of Geauga County and enrolled at KSU Geauga and Twinsburg Academic Center nursing programs. The nursing education program at Kent has made great strides, with new simulation labs and hospital room simulations recently installed specifically for the nursing program.
The scholarship establishment team from BMR consisting of Geauga County Commissioner Jim Dvorak, Carole Cashion, PhD and retired Dean Emerita at Ursuline College’s Breen School of Nursing, and Beverly Goodridge, BMR past president. All worked diligently with Becki Gierman and other administrators at KSU Geauga, to produce the guidelines for the scholarship which will be awarded to a student or students annually. The earnings from investments of the Endowment supply funds for use by the school when issuing the scholarships. Administrators from KSU Geauga, under the direction of Dean Angela Spalsbury, handle all paperwork and applications when selecting candidates.
This Endowed Scholarship represents a major step forward for BMR in their continuing support of youth and youth programs. The scholarship is in addition to local scholarships already in place for many years given to local students from our area including Berkshire, Cardinal and the Auburn Career Center. Supporting our youth is one of the five areas of service that Rotary Clubs around the world back through grants and fund raisers. Funds raised through BMRs successful Maple Splash Raffle and other projects will grow the size and reach of our new Endowed Scholarship over the coming years and produce a positive impact on local students to create meaningful careers in our local community. The Rotary Club of Burton-Middlefield is proud to work with KSU Geauga in creating this powerful new educational tool.
