Windham – The Brick by Brick Scholarship Committee will hold their annual fundraiser dinner this Saturday August 10, 2013 at Windham High School. Each year, the committee searches for the just the right person or group to honor at the dinner. The past honorees have been authors, local business people, Windham graduates who were/are superintendents, corporate clothing executive, musician, coaches, distinguished athletic teams, athletic directors, state troopers and more. This year they have chosen to honor the district’s four baseball teams that went to the final four of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) State Tournaments. The teams are from the years 1961, 2001, 2002, 2006.
The dinner will be served at 6 pm, with the school opening its doors at 5pm for a time of fellowship with the teams and viewing of the engraved brick walls. Following the dinner, there will be a short program starting at 7pm. One can expect to hear from several of the coaches, players and staff members as they share memories from the “glory” years. Come laugh, reminisce and help raise funds for a good cause.
The dinner will be prepared by the Congregational United Church of Christ in Windham. One can expect a fabulous chicken dinner with salad, veggies, and homemade pie for dessert. The cost for the dinner is $18 with $10 of it going in to the Brick by Brick Scholarship Fund and $8 for dinner.
The Brick by Brick Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 through the sale of engraved bricks. The funds generated from the sale were placed in a Certificate of Deposit (CD) at Cortland Bank in Windham. The fund currently is at $200,000 and each year the committee awards scholarships from the interest paid on the fund. This year they awarded eleven $1000 scholarships to seniors who applied, carried a 2.0 average and that are enrolled in an accredited school. The committee has awarded $120,000 in scholarships to deserving seniors since its inception.
Engraved bricks can still be purchased at $60 for individual brick, $100 for business brick, $2000 memorial brick and $5000 for foundation brick. Each brick has an allotted space for 14 characters, including punctuation. Brick purchasing can be done at anytime. A new wall will be constructed once enough bricks have been sold to pay for the construction. They currently have 25 sold for a fifth wall.
