Beyond the Mats: Garfield High School Wrestling Seniors Share Their Future Plans

1037

The 2023-24 wrestling team stands out as the sole squad in recent memory to boast a full roster at the onset of the season. In addition to this accomplishment, the team takes pride in having five seniors who dedicated four years to high school wrestling. The longevity of their tenure naturally positions these seniors as leaders among their peers. This article delves into the experiences of these seniors in the wrestling arena and explores their post-mat plans.

Vince D’Amico – 132 Pound Weight Class

Vince D’Amico, a Maplewood Career Center attendee, has been a dedicated wrestler throughout his high school years. Despite being unavailable for comment due to scheduling constraints, D’Amico’s reputation as a hardworking individual precedes him. His commitment to giving his best effort has been evident since childhood, where his early physical prowess set the stage for a successful wrestling career.

This strength translated seamlessly into high school, where D’Amico consistently honed his wrestling skills. His recent achievement at the sectional meet, emerging as one of the two seniors advancing to the regional meet, underscores his dedication. Post-graduation, armed with a Maplewood degree, D’Amico anticipates a wide array of future opportunities.

Deacon Sommer – 144 Pound Weight Class

Deacon Sommer, a pivotal member of the wrestling team throughout his high school journey, is not just a skilled wrestler but also a glue that binds the team together. Beyond wins and losses, Sommer’s influence extends to maintaining team cohesion and providing leadership. Unfortunately, Sommer’s senior season concluded at the recent sectional tournament.

Looking ahead, Sommer is eager to transition to track season with his friends, aiming for another MVAC Championship. His summer plans include work, along with quality time fishing and creek walking. With college not on his agenda, Sommer is poised for a fulfilling post-high school journey, relying on his charisma, energy, and positivity.

Andrew Borucki – 175 Pound Weight Class

Known for his comedic presence, Andrew “Bubbles” Borucki brings light-heartedness to the wrestling team. Wrestling, for Borucki, meant structure, though he looks forward to the freedom of eating as he pleases post-season. With a significant impact on the team, Borucki plans to enjoy a break from wrestling, work, and learn to swim during the upcoming months.

In the fall, Borucki will pursue Aerospace Engineering at Akron University, aiming to “build rockets.” His future looks promising, and his high school legacy is sure to be remembered.

Keegan Sell – 190 Pound Weight Class

Keegan Sell, with a complex relationship with wrestling, views it as a challenge due to dietary restrictions but excels with undeniable state-champion quality skills. As a senior, Sell recognizes his role as a top-tier athlete and a motivator for younger wrestlers. While the pressure for a back-to-back state title looms, Sell prefers a one-match-at-a-time approach.

Post-wrestling, Sell anticipates hitting the track in the spring and enjoying summer with friends before embarking on his football career at Grand Valley State University in the fall. Keegan Sell remains one of Garrettsville’s greatest athletes.

Aiden Kissell – 215 Pound Weight Class

Aiden Kissell, following in his older brother’s footsteps, reflects on the meaningful experiences wrestling has brought him. As a senior, Kissell sees himself as a mentor, capable of molding younger athletes into better wrestlers. Despite minimal leadership responsibilities, Kissell’s seniority and skill contribute significantly to the team.

Following the wrestling season, Kissell has secured a roadwork job, aiming to save money for college and future needs. His plans for the summer align with work, and in the fall, Kissell envisions attending Kent State University for accounting while maintaining his strong work ethic. With a promising future ahead, Aiden Kissell is well-prepared for life beyond high school.
