On June 7, 1947, Arthur Raymond Perrine Sr. was born in the family home in Parkman, OH, to Marvin and Beulah (Seal) Perrine. Having seven older siblings with the last in line nine years older, Arthur was a surprise and was doted on by the older siblings and cousins. Arthur loved going “back home” to Gassaway, WV, where his parents were born and raised.
At an early age he contracted polio and had to be in a body cast from the waist down. Little Arthur persevered and became a good athlete as a young man, playing basketball and baseball. In the 1960’s, the Cleveland Browns trained at Hiram College; Art loved to go watch the greats of the 50’s and 60’s, meeting Hall of Famer Jim Brown. Arthur had always been an avid Cleveland Sports fan, Browns, Cavaliers, and as he said, they will always be the Indians, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Arthur met Mildred Ellison, married, and started a family young. They had four children, Arthur Jr. (“Sonny”) , Janet, Marvin, and Cindy. The family settled in Nelson, Ohio in their home Arthur and his brother, Lance built. Arthur had several jobs and eventually retired from Harbison Walker International in Windham, Ohio where he was a talented machinist. His specialized talents saved the company many times from scrapping valuable machines by making obscure parts. For several years he was the President of the local 8565-03 United Steelworkers International Union. Arthur and Mildred divorced, and he eventually met Diana Campbell. They married and had Amanda.
He loved to follow and help with Amanda’s travel softball. Diana and Art divorced also. However, he and his children’s mothers have kept close relationships, enjoying time together with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. After retirement, he enjoyed spending his summers camping at Leisure Lake in Diamond, OH, with his close friend Mickey Christopher, and his daughter’s camp in Pleasantville, PA, where he enjoyed riding ATVs. Arthur was a Lifetime member of The Fraternal Order of Eagles #2705, holding various offices, and the handyman. He enjoyed bringing his grandchildren to the holiday parties.
He leaves behind his beloved children Arthur (Annette), Janet (Tom), Cindy, Amanda (Matt) and daughter-in-law Ruth. Grandchildren, Kari, Rachel, Desi, Jessica, Justin, Lindsay, Christopher, Emily, Stephenie, Trenton, Marlayna, Logan, Megan, Mackenzie, Kolby, Julie, and Colin, great-grandchildren Raven, Felicia, Levi, Jayden, Finn, Jameson, Jennings, Liam, Caelum, and Daxtan, and his sister-in-law Mary Perrine.
Arthur was preceded in death by his son Marvin, grandson Mason, grandson-in-law, Derek Speicher, parents, and siblings Irene, Lorraine, Max, Roy, Dacie, Bud and Lance. He recently lost his “favorite child” Sadie, his four-legged companion.
Visitation was held on Monday, August 7, 2023 at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231. A funeral service followed.
