Hiram – Hiram College will unveil “Archaic_1851.2003.2019,” an exhibition featuring the work of Greg Martin on February 1 in the College’s Gelbke Fine Arts Gallery, 12000 Winrock Road in Hiram. The exhibition opens with a 5-7 p.m. reception and Martin will speak about his work at 6 p.m.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Martin is an artist and designer known for incorporating the historic process of wet plate collodion photography into his practice. Wet plate collodion was one of the earliest photographic processes, used between the 1850s-1870s to produce ambrotype and tintype portraits of individuals and families. His work pushes the boundaries of the medium, exploring ways to take advantage of its unique attributes.
Martin’s work ranges from historically accurate uses of the medium to purely contemporary and abstract explorations of the collodion chemistry. He pushes the boundaries of the challenging medium, exploring ways to take advantage of its unique attributes, and using the process to address contemporary issues faced in modern life.
His work has been featured in many solo and group shows, including “Duo/Trio – Contemporary Diptychs and Tripychs,” now on display at the Riffe Gallery in Columbus, Ohio, and a solo exhibition that recently concluded at the Massillon Museum in Massillon, Ohio. His work was also published in a recent issue of the quarterly arts magazine The Hand, and is included in a variety of collections, including University Hospitals Permanent Collection, and the Fred and Laura Bidwell Collection. In late February, Martin will have his first solo exhibition outside the United States at Fabrica de Arte Cubano in Havana, Cuba
His work will be on display until February 28. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. or by appointment.
