Communities across Portage County and the surrounding area are proud to announce the formation of a new athletic league. Beginning with the fall 2027 athletic season, the conference will bring together eight schools with deep-rooted traditions, strong community pride, and a shared commitment to student-athlete success.

The new conference will include the following member schools: James A. Garfield, Southeast, Mogadore, Akron Springfield, Crestwood, Rootstown, Ravenna, and Waterloo.

Over the past year, athletic directors and superintendents from each district have worked collaboratively and thoughtfully to design a league that prioritizes what matters most—students, schools, and communities. The conference is built on the belief that local rivalries, geographic proximity, and shared history create meaningful competition and unforgettable experiences for student-athletes, families, and fans.

“Our communities are close, our schools share a rich athletic history, and our students deserve opportunities that reduce travel time while increasing excitement and school pride,” the group shared in a joint statement. “The new conference allows us to honor tradition while building something strong and sustainable for the future.”

To form the new league, schools will formally depart their current conferences as follows:

James A. Garfield – MVAC

Southeast – MVAC

Mogadore – Independent

Akron Springfield – Metro Conference

Crestwood – CVC

Rootstown – CVC

Ravenna – Metro Conference

Waterloo – MVAC

The transition period will allow districts to plan thoughtfully and ensure a smooth launch ahead of the 2027 season.

The new conference is expected to reignite traditional rivalries, increase student participation, and strengthen community engagement at athletic events. More than a scheduling change, the conference represents a shared vision—one that values sportsmanship, competition, and community connection.

Further details regarding league structure, scheduling, and championship formats will be shared as the inaugural season approaches.

The new conferences will be where tradition, community, and competition come together.
