Ravenna – The premise of the latest super-hero movie that’s coming to theaters in early April is that we all have a hero inside. Based on a DC Comics character, a streetwise foster kid Billy Batson can turn into the adult superhero Shazam, just by shouting out one word. You guessed it — Shazam!
While the movie relies on magic to make the transformation, it’s important to note that we all have a superhero inside us. You don’t need to wear a special costume or shout a special word. To make that point, the folks at Portage County Job and Family Services will be at Ravenna 7 Theatre before and after the premiere of the “Shazam!” movie; Friday April 5th (from 4-9 pm) and Saturday, April 6th (from noon until 5 pm).
During those times, moviegoers can take part in special super hero training exercises and participate in other super hero activities. They’ll be opportunities for family photos, as well. In addition, folks will be on hand to talk about foster parenting and adoption, so you can find out if those may be some of your super powers. In addition, moviegoers can donate new, unopened packages of diapers and baby wipes for foster kids, because donations make you a super hero, too. Not all super heroes wear capes, but if you do, costumes are welcome. For more information, contact Kim at (330) 357-7190.
Then, on Saturday, April 13th you’re invited to the 2nd Annual Family Fun Day. During this free afternoon program, you’ll have the chance to learn more about family resources in Portage County. Grab lunch, learn, and gain the chance to win prizes. From 12:30 to 1 pm, the Portage Health District will share car seat safety information. Next, Outback Ray’s Animal Show will delight kids of all ages from 1 – 2 pm. Afterwards, the Portage Parks District will share details on their new program, ParksRX.
There is something for everyone, so bring your family to play games, make crafts and enjoy a fun day out together. Throughout the event, parents are invited to visit the community partner tables and learn more about resources and support available in Portage County. The event takes place at Brown Middle School, 228 S. Scranton Street in Ravenna; it’s sponsored by the Children Services Division or Portage County Job & Family Services.
