Hiram – Each spring, Hiram’s Art and Design program hosts a Juried Student Art Show in the Gelbke Fine Arts Center Gallery. With the rise of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and the closure of many public spaces, this year’s show is presented through a virtual space, where visitors can explore the exhibition in full.
Featuring the work of students from diverse art disciplines, including painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, and video, the exhibition is open to the public and can be accessed through the College’s website at www.hiram.edu/artshow. Guests can also read the gallery director’s welcome, the juror’s statement, and sign the guest book.
Pieces submitted to the show were required to be completed during the students’ college career. The exhibition serves as an educational opportunity for students, as they learn how to prepare work for presentation, how to price artwork, and the selection criteria used by a professional juror to recognize artistic achievement.
The 2020 winners include:
Alex and Tamara Brady Pendleton Best in Show Award: Natalie Quarry of Ravenna, Ohio for her body of work.
Paul A. Rockford Award for Excellence: Kathryn Slates of Aurora, Ohio for her body of work.
Juror’s Mention: Charlie Wirfel of Fairview Park, Ohio for his painting.
The juror for the show was Arron Foster, an established professional artist and educator. Foster received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and art education from East Carolina University and furthered his education with a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and book arts from the University of Georgia. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and has held academic appointments at the University of Georgia, Kent State University, and Ohio University.
