Alfred Matthew

Alfred Mathew, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in the arms of his beloved wife Deb Mathews on May 9, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on July 25, 1949, in Warren, Ohio. He battled pancreatic cancer for the past 7 months. Alfred spent his early years in Warren, Ohio and raised his family in Newton Falls, Ohio (Tommy Mathews, Nancy Mathews, Brandie Mathews). He played horseshoes at Steve’s L bar for many years, enjoying great fun every summer with friends.

He dedicated many years of service to the Warren City School District, where he worked as a custodian and groundskeeper.  After his time in Warren, Alfred continued his career in grounds maintenance at the YMCA in Fort Myers, Florida, and later in Texas. In Jacksonville, he cared for the ballpark grounds for the Park Services, often seen on his tractor, tending to the fields with a tan that reflected his dedication to his work.

Later in life, Alfred found love with Debra Mathews in Jacksonville, FL. Together, they shared a fun and active life, enjoying each other’s company and creating cherished memories. Alfred embraced Debra’s daughters and step-grandchild, Hunter Levitt, teaching him to mow lawns and bonding over their shared love of watching football.

Alfred is survived by his loving wife, Debra Mathews; daughters Nancy Kapis and Brandie Schmick; sisters Jean Comer and Tammy Nemes; stepdaughters Samantha Levitt and Georganna Frena; and grandchildren Chaz Kapis, Alix Soda, Lucyna Meza, Esteban Meza, Conor Boyle, Brendan Boyle, Aidan Boyle, and Hunter Levitt. He was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Mathews; mother, Truba Kidd; father, Alfred Leroy; second wife, Pat Mathews; brothers Terry Mathews and Robby Mathews; and sister, Lori Ragozzine.

Alfred’s warmth, generosity, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
