The Portage County Historical Society will present a Primer on the Ohio Canals, featuring the Pennsylvania & Ohio Canal on April 23rd at 2pm.
Guest Speaker David A. Neuhardt was born near the Miami & Erie Canal in Sidney, Ohio, and lived for many years just a block from the route of that canal in downtown Dayton. He has been a trustee and officer of the Canal Society of Ohio for over 30 years, has led over a dozen bus tours of various sections of the Ohio canal system and has periodically taught a class on Ohio canal history for University of Dayton’s Osher Center for Learning in Retirement. He also edits the Canal Society of Ohio’s quarterly journal, Towpaths. With a lifetime interest in Ohio history, Dave lives with his wife Sharen in an 1842 Greek Revival house on a 650 acre working farm near Yellow Springs, Ohio and practices corporate and securities law at Thompson Hine in Dayton.
The event is free to the public, although donations are appreciated. Light refreshments will be available. The Historical Society is located at 6549 North Chestnut Street, in Ravenna, next to Ravenna High School.
