A Friendly Reminder to all Residents

1302

This year November 3rd is the date in which clocks are to be turned back for daylight saving time. With this comes the reminder to change the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

The Garrettsville-Freedom-Nelson Joint Fire District keeps a stock of 9-Volt batteries on hand to give out free of charge to anyone in need; they are available for pickup Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm.

It is recommended to have at least one smoke detector in every level of your home, preferably one in each sleeping room as well. Smoke detectors themselves should be replaced at least every 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors every five years. The National Fire Protection Association also recommends that all chimneys should be inspected by a certified chimney sweep once a year, and professionally cleaned if necessary.

Every year the Garrettsville Freedom Nelson Joint Fire District responds to multiple chimney fires due to soot and creosote deposits, and these types of home threatening fires are easily prevented with proactive cleaning and maintenance.

I wish everyone a safe and healthy fall and holiday season.
