Benefit Book Sale

Benefit Dinner

JAG Student Council is having a benefit dinner through People Tree on March 14th from 4-8pm in the High School Cafeteria.  It is a spaghetti dinner, all-you-can- eat, for $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children under 10.  All proceeds will go to benefit the McBride family the AND Grandpa Orban, age 105, who recently lost their home to a fire. Money can be donated directly to People Tree to help the family.

St. Patrick’s Party

The Windham Church of Christ, 9837 Wolf Road in Windham, will have its monthly Family Activity Day on March 15th in the fellowship hall. Youth Shotgun Clinic

March 15

Streetsboro Sportsmen Association will hold a free Youth Shotgun Clinic on March 15th from 9 am – 1 pm at their location on Bloom Road in Nelson. Children aged 9 to 18 are welcome to attend with a responsible adult. Participants will learn basic shotgun safety and operation at one of the NRA’s top affiliates. Celtic Faire

A Celtic Faire will be held on March 15th at 6pm at the Palmyra UMC (3968 St. Rt. 225 in Diamond, OH) a dinner consisting of roast beef, potatoes, carrots, soup, salad, ethnic bread and desserts will be served as you are entertained by various talented musicians and singers with an Irish, Scottish and Welsh flair. Girl Scout Cookie Sales

Full Moon Field Station Talk: What’s Living in the Water?

Dr. Jennifer Clark, Assistant Professor of Biology, will be discussing her on-going work with students on monitoring projects within the newly restored portion of Eagle Creek at Hiram College’s JH Barrow Field Station. The talk will focus on what was in the stream prior to restoration, and future work to be conducted to monitor stream health and success of the restoration project. The talk begins at 7:00pm. AMVETS Post 112 breakfast will be held March 16th from 9am – noon at the Post home, 37 W. Broad St. Newton Falls. Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner

A corned beef and cabbage dinner will be held on Sunday, March 16 as a primer for Saint Patrick’s Day at the Garrettsville United Methodist Church from 4:00 to 7:00.  We are located at 8223 Park Ave., next to the Intermediate School.  Dinner, beverage and dessert will be on offer (Hot dogs will be available for the wee ones—not leprechauns—if they would prefer to skip the whole Irish of it).  A freewill offering will be taken, directed to the church general fund.  Pierogis(frozen) are also still available.

 

Mantua Historical Society Meeting

The Mantua Historical Society will hold its first meeting of 2014, at 7:00 p.m. on March 17th at the Mantua Township Hall, located at the intersection of S.R. 82 and Mantua Center Road.  The members would like to welcome the public and prospective new members to a Show and Tell program that will include light refreshments.  Membership is only $8.00 for a single and $12.00 for a couple.  The museum, which is located on the second floor, will be open after the meeting.

BioBuddies: Life Under a Log!

March 17, 24, & 31

BioBuddies provides hands-on, developmentally appropriate nature experiences for early learners (ages 3-5). During Life Under a Log children will explore the creepy, crawly critters that live under logs in the forest, including salamanders, worms, potato bugs, millipedes and much more. In the process, children will explore habitats, the differences between living and nonliving things, and make a terrarium. Mantua Community Center Open

March 18

The Community Center at Mantua Center will now be open on Tuesdays from 10-4, starting March 18th.  As before, we will have a potluck meal at about noon, so bring food to share.  We hope to offer more programming, starting with a class on beginning quilt piecing at 1:00 on March 18.  All materials will be provided for you to make a simple 9-patch block which you may either keep or contribute to the making of a quilt which will be given to the family of an Ohio service member who has died in action.  If you have an easily portable sewing machine, please bring it.  Other activities also available; including just chatting, working on a partially completed jigsaw puzzle, and games to play.  Exercise time will be offered if there is interest.  For more information, contact Ellie Monroe at efoster@config.com or 330-274-0711.

 

Chicken Dinner

Covenant Bible Fellowship is holding our monthly free dinner on March 18th from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. They are located at 8146 High Street, Garrettsville. The Miracles of Jesus

St. Ambrose Parish will present The Miracles of Jesus on March 19th at 7pm in the church. The Stations of the Cross will be presented by the high school Religion class on March 21st at 7pm. These presentations will be presented in shadows on a stage set up in the church. No admission fee, donations accepted

 

Home Cooked Supper

The next home cooked supper at Pricetown Methodist Church, 4640 Pritchard-Ohltown Rd, Newton Falls will be held March 19th from 5-6:30pm. The dinner will feature Salisbury steak, Mashed Potatoes, Super Salad, Corn, Rolls, Dessert and Beverage. Cost $7 for adults, $5 for children under 10 years. Carryouts will be available.

 

Children’s Illustrator: Robin Brickman

Join us for a workshop with Robin Brickman, children’s book illustrator, as she helps children make a connection between art and science. She will introduce her method of sculpting paper images, while introducing scientific observation, motor skill development and new art techniques. Bog Sucker Boogie

Woodcocks will be all atwitter as they perform their evening aerial song and incredible sky dance. Join naturalist Bob Faber at 6:30pm as he leads a quiet observational walk to look and listen for these odd and secretive birds that go by entertaining nicknames like “timberdoodle”, “Labrador twister” and “bog sucker”. Baseball Camp

The Garfield G-Men high school baseball team will again be hosting its 1 day youth camp. There will be two time slots available: ages 8-10 will be from 10:00 am -12:30. Ages 11-14 will be from 1pm-4pm. Both camps will be held in the HS gymnasium. Campers must register by March 15th to receive a t-shirt. The Nelson UMC will be hosting their Swiss Steak dinner of March 22nd at the Nelson Community House on Nelson Circle. Dinner will be served from 4-7 pm and the cost is $9.00 for adults. The dinner consists of tender Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn casserole, coleslaw, rolls, dessert and beverage.

 

Nature’s Wine: Painting Workshop

Join instructor Carol Agnew and come paint with us! All skill levels are invited for an afternoon of fun, creativity and relaxation while enjoying our featured wine from Candlelight Winery! Concerned Citizens of Ohio/Hiram free monthly private water well monitoring using Sierra Club meters to test for “indicators” of water quality in the Community Room of Hiram Christian Church, 6868 Wakefield Road in Hiram. Indian Trails Chapter IAAP will meet on March 25th at 5:45 pm at The Davey Institute, 1500 N. Mantua St., Kent. Deborah Darling will present Your Power is Not in Your PowerPoint. This course will start by giving you some background in how the mind takes in information and how the information needs to be delivered in order to gain the most attention and retention by the listener. This course will help you create presentations that will move your audiences to action in a powerful and persuasive manner. NF Cemetery Association Dinner

A dinner sponsored by the Newton Township Cemetery Association will be held April 5th from 4-7 p.m. at the First Christian Church; 17 N. Canal St., Newton Falls. The menu will be creamed chicken on biscuit, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, dessert, and beverages. Prices for the dinner are: Ages 12- Adults  $9.00,  Ages 3-11  $6.00  Ages 2 & under  free. St. Mary and St. Joseph’s Ladies Guild of Newton Falls will be baking homemade Kolache for the Easter holiday and you may purchase this taste of Eastern Europe at the low cost of $10.00 each. The Burton American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 459 Oink and Squeal Party raffle and Chinese auction will be April 12th. Doors open at 5pm and raffle begins at 7pm. Come create a Hypertufa planter on April 12th from 10:00 a.m.-Noon at the Portage County Garden Center, 5154 S. Prospect St. Ravenna, Ohio (St. Rt. 44 s. of Rootstown) Fee: $20 all materials (except plants) included Contact Helena Parry for registration 330-673-0577.You can create a hypertufa planter. Materials will be provided. If you have a special form you want to use, or special items for creating outside texture, please bring them. We provide disposable latex gloves, but you may wish to bring a sturdier pair of dishwashing gloves. Your finished container will be wet. To safely transport the container in your vehicle, consider how to best secure your creation for the drive home. Geauga County Master Gardeners present master of bonsai, Dale Harder, from The Cleveland Bonsai Club.  Learn about the history, origin and meaning of the ancient art of bonsai and how you can get started in creating your own bonsai tree.  Dale will display a few of his own creations.  Enjoy a demonstration and instructions in choosing the right plant, tools and pruning techniques.  Light refreshments provided. $15 fee.  While walk-ins are welcome, early registration is appreciated.  Call 440-834-4656 to register.

Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and Easter egg hunt will be April 19th from 8-10am at the Windham UMC, 9051 N. Main St. in Windham. Open to kids ages 12 and under. Free picture with the Bunny, make crafts, Easter egg hunt, and have breakfast on us

 

Shooting Stars Soccer

Apr 12 –May 17

Shooting Stars Soccer teaches children 3 and 4 years, with help from parents and instructors, the basic skills of soccer.   Non-competitive games will be played throughout this five week program and each child will receive a T-shirt.  Fee for Ravenna city taxpayer is $32 and non-city taxpayers is $35. Min 10 and max 14 per session. T-Ball

May 31- June 28

Ravenna Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring an instructional T-ball program for boys and girls ages 4 and 6; child must be at least 4 years old before May 31st. The fundamentals of basic baseball / softball are taught as children learn better throwing, catching and batting techniques using tennis balls and batting tees. Classes will be held on Saturdays May 31st to June 28th from 10-11:15am. at Havre Woods Park in Ravenna.  Registration fee for City Taxpayers (live or work in the Ravenna City) is $32.00 or Non-City Taxpayers is $40.00.

 

Hambden Grange Concerts

June 21 & July 19

The Huntsburg Grange has bandstand concerts set for June 21 with Boys Are Back, and July 19 with Fort Huntsburg Band.  Concerts start at 6 PM, rain or shine.  If it rains, concerts are held on the town hall stage.   Bring your lawn chair.  Refreshments will be available. Chaney High School Reunion

July 18 & 19

The Chaney High School Class of 1974 40th Class Reunion scheduled for the third weekend of July.  Please save the date and spread the word. The celebration starts on July 18th and the CHS Class of 1974 Invites All Chaney 70’s Graduates to “Come As You Were, Friday Night Fever Party”  at Kuzmans  Lounge.  Cost $5.00 per person.
