The Hiram College James H. Barrow Biological Field Station is pleased to announce its schedule of programming and educational outreach events for the month of April. These events are meant to engage the public in an understanding of the outdoors and environmental practices. All events are free and open to the public. Some events may require registration, please check the Field Station Events page for event details and registration links.

Spring Bird Walk Series –
Sunday Series, April 13, 20, 27, and May 4, 11, 18 | 7:30 a.m.
Each week’s walk will be led by a knowledgeable guide and will typically cover 2.5 miles of the Field Station’s natural surface trails, which may be muddy. All skill levels are welcome!
Here They Come! Spring Migrants –
Wednesday, April 16 | 6 – 7:30 p.m. | Visitor Center, Brick Room
The northward bird migration is already underway! Come out to the Field Station for an easy and fun program for beginner and intermediate birders. We’ll talk about warblers and share some good spots to go see them in real life. Meet in the Visitor Center’s Brick Room at the Field Station. Registration required
Bio Buddies – Spring Woods Walk –
Friday, April 25 | 10 – 11:30 a.m. | Observation Building
Depending on the weather, preschoolers (2.5 – 5 years old) accompanied by their special adult will enjoy a spring-themed book reading, a craft, or a discovery hike outside. Dress for the weather as we prefer to spend time outside if possible. Registration required
Wildflower Walk –
Saturday, April 26 | 1 – 3 p.m. | Visitor Center
Meet at the front parking area to join staff naturalists on an easy hike through the forest preserve in search of wildflowers. Dress for the weather. Trails can be muddy. Registration required.
Snakes: Love them or not, we need them –
Saturday, April 26 | 6 – 7 p.m. | Visitor Center, Brick Room
Snake researcher, Claire Partin ’25, has been hard at work trying to understand the snake populations at the Field Station, especially the impact emerging diseases may have on these important species. Registration required.
