Excitement filled the classrooms at Newton Falls Exempted Village Schools and James A Garfield Local Schools as two outstanding educators were surprised with the Crash-a-Class Mini-Grant, an initiative created by Shannan Jursa to recognize and support outstanding educators in our local classrooms. Each winning educator received a $1,000 grant to support innovative classroom projects, a surprise visit, and a special celebration with their students.

With the stage still set from the past weekends’ performance of The Glass Menagerie, Scott Szeljack a dedicated teacher at Newton Falls High School, was entirely caught off guard when he entered the auditorium to an outpouring of cheers from Jursa and staff, administration and the drama students. Mr. Szeljack was nominated by the school’s Principal, Rachel Rankin, for his unwavering commitment to resurrect the schools Drama Program.

Meanwhile, over at James A Garfield Elementary, Heather Brosius, was equally surprised and honored to be named a grant recipient. Jursa and staff, along with Administrators and her 2nd grade students, excitedly surprised her in her classroom.  Mrs. Brosius was nominated by Principal, Rachelle Craine, for her efforts in creating inclusive and enriching environments for all types of learners.

Administration oversaw the creation of videos highlighting students who had many wonderful things to say about these two educators. Mr. Szeljack and Mrs. Brosius were able to watch with their students and nominators as they thanked them for their impact in the classroom and on the stage.

“This initiative is personally funded and designed to give back to the educators who work tirelessly to inspire students daily,” said Jursa. “Often educators are using their own resources to create an elevated learning experience in their classroom. I want to support those efforts while relieving the financial obligations to create those environments.”

The event was captured in a special video featuring the principals and students celebrating their teachers’ achievements. While the school districts own the footage, Jursa hopes that sharing these moments will inspire others to support and uplift educators in their communities.

Local media were invited to attend the surprise announcements, bringing additional recognition to the incredible classroom work.

“Beyond the joy of giving, this grant is a way to highlight the importance of supporting our educators,” Jursa added. “I hope this initiative encourages others to find ways to recognize and celebrate teachers who make a difference in students’ educational journeys.”

Shannan Jursa created the Crash-a-Class Mini-Grant as a personal initiative to support educators and enhance student learning. The grant provides direct financial support to teachers while celebrating their dedication through a fun and unexpected recognition.
