At their January meeting, Crestwood Superintendent Aireane Curtis congratulated Board members on another year of service to the district. In her Superintendent’s Communication, Mrs. Curtis informed the Board about a potential opportunity for consideration. Curtis was approached by representatives from the Social Acquisition of Interpersonal Language (SAIL) program, a special K-12 educational through the ESC of the Western Reserve. This special intensive program provides academic instruction and inclusion opportunities for elementary, middle and high school with disabilities, providing licensed intervention specialists and aides. The group is exploring the opportunity of renting classroom space in Crestwood’s Central Office.

Mrs. Curtis noted that at SAIL’s current location in Painesville, the organization pays $5,000 per classroom; she shared that each classroom holds no more than eight students. SAIL would like four classrooms in the Central Office – one each for elementary, middle, and high school-aged students with an addition ‘sensory’ room for their combined use. Mrs. Curtis noted that Crestwood could see, “a lot of positives with this opportunity”. It was noted that the program would allow SAIL to serve students from around Portage County, include a potential two to four current Crestwood students. Board members expressed interest in investigating this matter further.  Mrs. Curtis provided Board members with additional detail for their consideration.

In the 2025 organization meeting held immediately prior to the regular meeting, Kristen Cavanaugh assumed the role of President and Eric Hummel was named Vice President for the calendar year. Bonnie Lovejoy, Todd Monroe, and Dan Tillett will serve as board members.

In addition, appointments were made to the following areas of responsibility. Mr. Monroe will report on Athletics and serve on the PI/Safety Committee with Mr. Hummel. Mrs. Lovejoy will serve as the OSBA Legislative Liaison, Maplewood Representative, and serve with Mr. Tillet on the Policy Committee. Mrs. Cavanaugh and Mr. Hummel will serve together on the Audit/Finance Committee.

The next regularly scheduled School Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 11 at 7 pm at the Central Office (10880 John Edward Drive). Meetings can also be viewed online at www.crestwoodschools.org/departments/board-of-education.
