SOAR Initiative: Building Resilience in the Digital Age

552

The Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary meeting on December 9, 2024, featured a program from Project Promise/SOAR (Savvy, Observant, Animated, Resourceful). This initiative, created by John Clark and Kali Roberts with support from the James Woods Foundation, addresses the effects of online existence on today’s youth. The program focuses on key issues such as societal challenges, communication, youth concerns, sexual violence, resilience, and community involvement. These issues affect people everywhere—urban and rural, young and old.

Elayne Cross, the head of SOAR, provided an overview of the support systems and communication skills the program is developing to tackle challenges like suicide prevention and the suppression of “sextortion.” These efforts include building trusted resources and networks within the community. Churches, youth groups, media outreach, and guest speakers are envisioned as part of a comprehensive approach to counteract these widespread problems.

The program’s mission is not limited to youth. Scams and online threats impact individuals of all ages, underscoring the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to prevent harm. Advocacy, community service, and education are central to the project’s goals, as are participation in Project Promise/SOAR meetings and presentations.
