Please attend The First Annual Spaghetti Dinner & Chinese Auction Nov 23rd at James A. Portage County 4-H & Mantua Masonic Lodge are hosting a Swiss Steak dinner Nov 23rd from 5-7pm.  Dinner includes Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, green beans or corn, applesauce, bread, dessert, and your choice of coffee or punch. Stuff the Bus

Parkman Feather Party

Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner

On Nov 23rd there will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville United Methodist Church off St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville. The dinner begins at 4pm and we will serve until 6:30 unless food runs out. The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $9 for adults and $3.50 for children. Takeout’s are available.

 

Benefit Spaghetti Dinner

A benefit spaghetti dinner

is being held for Denise Morehead who is enduring treatment for kidney cancer.  The dinner will be held at the Elks Club in Kent at 2265 Erie Street Ravenna (located behind Twin Star Bowling Alley) on November 24, at 3pm -7pm. The dinner includes spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and beverage. Tickets for the dinner are $8 for adults and $5 for children. The benefit dinner will also have a 50/50 raffle, and basket raffles. Free Water Well Monitoring

Concerned Citizens Ohio/ Hiram free monthly private water well monitoring using Sierra Club meters to test for “indicators” of water quality in the Community Room (downstairs) of the Hiram Christian Church, 6868 Wakefield Road, Hiram, OH 44234 (corner of State Routes 700, 82, 305) on Nov 25th at 7 pm. For accurate readings, your sample should be taken as directly from the well as possible— before any treatment and within an hour before we test it. For a sample “fresh from the well,” drain the water sitting in your pipes by running any household cold water for about 10 minutes before you collect your sample (from the well head or from a faucet on your pump). Use a clean, wide-mouthed, covered glass container that holds about 8 oz.  Come at 7:00 and we’ll be running videos with experts explaining the hydrofracture (“fracking”) shale drilling and why it produces so much toxic waste. You can stay as long as you find the videos interesting, while you’re waiting for you water to be tested. Domestic Violence Program

The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown will present a program on domestic violence. This program is free to the public, and will be Nov 25th at 6:30 in the Park Vista community room on Fifth Avenue in Youngstown .Dottie Kane will discuss background and statistics, Attorney Michelle Simonelli will present the legal process and Dr. Monica Dragoman will have information on Domestic Violence as a global health issue.

 

Blood Drive

It is time for our last blood drive for the American Red Cross at our church, this year, but sadly it will be our last one totally. Circumstances have made it so that we will not be able to continue doing these at our church. We will miss you all and are very grateful for your attendance all these years. It has been a labor of love, but all things come to an end, there will be someone else to do it, and the drive will continue somewhere.  Ours is Nov. 27th, from noon to 6pm and we have a lot to be thankful for this year, your loyalty and caring all these years. Please come and let us thank you, there will be T shirts this time .and I have been told they are very special, so see you then. Thank you editors for all your help over these 10 years and getting the message out to the community, Deanie Simpson, coordinator for the American Red Cross and our church.

 

PCDL Closed Thanksgiving

All branches and offices of the Portage County District Library will close at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 27 and will remain closed Thursday, November 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. 3rd Annual Turkey Walk / Run

Come out and join us Thanksgiving morning for the 3rd Annual  Brimfield 1 Mile/5-K Turkey Walk/Run through local neighborhoods – strollers, wagons and pets welcome! Registration starts at 7:45 at the Brimfield Plaza*Corner of St. Rt. 43 and Tallmadge Rd. The walk/run starts promptly at 8:30 Rain or Shine! Cost: 2 non perishable food items,  new toy for the Brimfield Community Cupboard – Cash donations will also be accepted.  This walk/Run is an OPEN event – So start a New FAMILY Tradition that gets you off the couch and moving – Also to encourage people who don’t/can’t run ~ to come out and just walk…young and old alike!!!

 

“Diving Into Nature!”

Don’t take the kids shopping on Black Friday. Take them outside! On Nov 29 from 1-4 pm  children (ages 8-12) will have fun exploring nature and learning how to observe and describe the world around them. Each participant will make their own nature journal and practice using it to help them become keen observers of their surroundings. Nature discoveries will be creatively recorded in the journals through writing, drawing, and crafts. Families are invited to join us at the end of the program as we share our discoveries while warming up by a campfire. Fee: $8 per participant. Christmas at the Barnhisel House

The public is invited to Christmas at the Barnhisel House at 1011 N. State Street, Nov 30th Dec 1st, 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th from1-5pm. The theme is “Dolls and Bears”.  Visitors will see a variety of bears and dolls displayed all through the historic Barnhisel estate. Refreshments, Christmas music on the organ and guides dressed in period costume will welcome guests to the event. Author Les Roberts

On Dec 3rd at 6:30 pm, Author Les Roberts will be at the Burton Public Library. Les Roberts is the author of 17 mystery novels featuring Cleveland private investigator Milan Jacovich, as well as 11 other books of fiction. He came to mystery writing after a 24-year career in Hollywood writing and producing television shows. A native of Chicago, he now lives in Northeast Ohio. Book signing will follow the program with books available for purchase. Seating is limited to 50.

 

Community Center Open

The Community Center at Mantua Center will be open on Wednesdays December 4, 11, and 18. Coffee and tea are always available, as are a jigsaw puzzle to help construct, a choice of board games, and a variety of craft materials and books for kids.   We have a potluck lunch at about noon, and we always seem to have a good variety of food to share.  People enjoy sitting and chatting, or working on various projects they bring, such as quilt piecing, scrapbooking, and crocheting.  Most afternoons there are group’s playing cards.  Hours are 10am to 4pm, reopening for a 7pm yoga class.  Enter the south entrance of the single story addition behind the old Mantua Center School, just north of SR82 on Center Rd.  We will be closed on Nov. 27, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1 because of holidays.  If participation continues to be good we will announce January openings in mid-December.  Contact Susan Buckles at 724-544-6881 or Carol Srajer at 330-562-8869 if you need more information.

Blues DeVille to Play

15th Century Yuletide Revels Christmas Dinner & Show

The James A. Garfield Theatre Department is having their 2nd Annual 15th Century England Yuletide Revels Christmas dinner and show on Dec 7th.  Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for children 7 and younger. On Dec 7th from 9-1 there will be a toy drop off at Cole Valley Chevrolet. Toys and donations will be for the children of Newton Falls. All donations stay in Newton Falls, please help make a Christmas for our needy kids.

 

Chinese Auction

New Mercies Community Church at the corner of Butternut and Aquilla roads is holding a Chinese auction on Dec 7th. Doors open at 4pm, auction starts at 6pm. Admission is $5 with 25 bidding tickets and $3 each additional sheet some of the prizes include a $250 grand walk in kitchen donated by step 2 a girls bike, a $50 cleats gift card and a $75 cheese basket from Cabot’s, along with over 300 other wonderful items food will be served all night come in from the cold and do come Christmas shopping with us.

 

Christmas Bazaar

The Girard Junior Women present the annual Christmas Bazaar on Dec 7th from 10-2pm. The Christmas Bazaar includes a baked goods sale, a gifts table at kid friendly prices, free games and a coloring contest. Santa arrives at 11am and will visit with children and pose for photos for anyone with a camera until 1 pm. Girard City Gym is located on W. Main St. in Girard. The Herb Society, part of the Portage County Gardeners, is hosting a Winter Craft Show on Dec 7th from 9-3 at the Gardeners’ Center, 5154 S. Prospect St. in Rootstown. St. Ambrose Christma Concert

St. Ambrose Church in Garrettsville is holding their annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 8th at 6pm. Sacred and secular Christmas music will be performed by the Adult vocal choir and the O.K. Chorale Children’s Choir. Special guest accompanist is Pat Amor. Hidden in Plain Sight

Hidden in Plain Sight, an awareness program for parents and other adults will be held Dec 10th at Crestwood High School in Mantua. Doors open at 7:15 and presentation will begin at 7:30. There will be an astonishing, interactive exhibit designed to resemble a teenager’s bedroom, which contains 150+ items which may be indicative of risky behaviors such as substance use, violence, eating disorders, juvenile crime, technology, risky games/challenges and more accompanies by a PowerPoint presentation and discussion. Hiram College Cheer Camp

Kids from ages 5-12 can learn cheers and a dance from the Hiram College Cheerleaders and cheer at half-time on Dec 14th. Check in is 9:45 in the Colman Sports Center Lobby, and camp begins at 10am in the Martin Field House, game to follow at 3pm at the Charles A. Henry Field Cost is $45 for the camp; add an additional $6 to eat lunch with the Hiram Cheerleaders.  A check written to Hiram College can be mailed to:  Terry Clutter Athletic Dept. P.O. Chinese Auction

The Garfield Band Boosters will be having a Chinese Auction on Dec 15th from 2-4 pm during our “Sounds of the Season” winter concerts.  The auction is open to the public and will be held at Garfield High School.  Please also join us for some great holiday music as the high school concert band and choir will perform at 2 pm followed by the middle school concert at 4 pm.   Between concerts, light refreshments will be served and the high school “Swing Machine” jazz band will perform.  All Garfield band concerts are free and open to the public.

 

Longest Night Service for Those Who Mourn

The holidays are full of peppy music, colorful desserts, and brightly wrapped gifts.  But the holidays can be difficult when you miss someone at your holiday table.  December 21st is the longest night of the year and represents the long, dark night of mourning.  Join us at the Windham United Methodist Church, 9051 N. Main St. Windham OH, at 7 pm for a time to remember those you’ve lost, and take a moment in the quiet of winter to honor them.  All are welcome.
