Looking for a way to enjoy the arts a little closer to home than a trip to Cleveland or Akron? Join in a summer tradition that’s been taking place in Hudson since the early 1960s – the Hudson Society of Artists (HSA) Clothesline Art Show. This year marks the 50th annual show, which will take place during the Hudson Home & Garden Tour. This weekend’s show will once again feature a wide variety of original artwork for sale created by HSA members, along with artist demos and special displays to mark the occasion.
There will be about 250 paintings on display — many realistic watercolors, along with oils, acrylics and mixed-media pieces. Most pieces are unframed but matted, with prices ranging from $15 to $200. As in past shows, all artwork is original; there are never prints in the show. At the show, visitors will also have the opportunity to watch artists work, as HSA members Barbara Zohn, Lucy Karslake and Shannon Casey will provide demos. There will also be hands-on activities to try, like sumi painting – Asian ink wash painting – with artist Barbara Zohn.
In addition, visitors will have an opportunity to enter to win a painting donated by Hilary Sheeter, a long-time HSA member recognized for his watercolor depictions of Hudson life and architecture. Ten percent of the proceeds from the Clothesline Art Show and other group sponsored shows benefit HSA’s charity, the Lowell E. Smith/Margaret Roby Memorial Scholarship. Each year the award is presented to a Hudson High School senior art student.
Artwork will be on display at the Clothesline Art Show on Thursday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show will be held at the Hudson Middle School, located at 77 N. Oviatt St., which is also the site of the Hudson Garden Club’s Garden Shop and Tea Room. The show is free and open to the public.
The Hudson Society of Artists meets the first and third Mondays of the month from September to the beginning of June. Programs begin at 7:30 pm at Barlow Community Center and are open to the public. Meetings include demos, talks and critiques. Membership is open to artists of all ages and abilities, from professionals to beginners, as well as to those who simply enjoy the arts.
