Weather Didn’t Hamper Easter Carnival

736

Mantua – Scads of kids went to Crestwood Primary School this past Saturday. Yes, they willingly came to school on the first Saturday of spring break, but their motivation was anything but academic. On their minds were eggs, candy, Easter baskets and carnival games — and they were not disappointed.

The Leo Group, part of Lions Club International, sponsored a free coloring contest, carnival and egg hunt for area kids and their families. For the cost of a mere quarter, kids had the opportunity to play a variety of carnival games while they waited their turn to gather eggs.

Due to the weather, the egg hunt was held in the school gym, so finding eggs wasn’t much of a challenge. But the children, aged one to eleven, didn’t seem to mind, as they gathered as many eggs as their baskets could hold. As an added bonus, adults didn’t need to brave the elements to enjoy the antics as kids and grandkids enjoyed the snow-free gymnasium. Proceeds earned through the games and raffle ticket sales will be used by the Leos to help fund other community events, so everyone truly was a winner.

The Leos, a community service organization made up of around twenty students from Crestwood Middle School, sponsor the annual event as a way to provide area kids with an opportunity to get into the spirit of Easter. Says Leo Group’s advisor, Lynne McDermott, “As long as the kids are happy, we’re happy.” And if the joyous expression on the face of Madelyn Jyurovat, winner of the giant inflatable bunny raffle, is any proof, the Leo’s spring event hit the mark again this year.
